Mongolia ratifies the ILO Maritime Labour Convention,2006 (MLC, 2006)

On 1 September 2015, the Government of Mongolia deposited with the International Labour Office the instrument of ratification of the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC, 2006) . Mongolia, the 69th ILO member State to ratify the Convention, joins the global efforts to ensure comprehensive worldwide protection of the rights of seafarers and establish a level playing field for shipowners, thus protecting them from unfair competition on the part of substandard ships. While Mongolia is the largest landlocked country in the world, ships registered under its flag total more than 800.000 gross tonnage of shipping.

The MLC, 2006 entered into force on 20 August 2013 for the first 30 member States that had registered their ratification by 20 August 2012. The Convention will enter into force for Mongolia on 1 September 2016, that is, one year after its ratification. To date, the States that have ratified the MLC, 2006 represent over 80 per cent of the world gross tonnage of shipping. For more background information, please visit the dedicated MLC webpage at
